Cuckoo Flowers

As soon as I hear the first Cuckoo calling here, usually in mid-April I go to look for the Cuckoo Flower, also known as Ladies Smock.

The Cuckoo is a parasitic brood bird, laying it’s eggs in others nests to the detriment of the hosts own brood … most commonly the Meadow Pipit, I’ve often seen these tiny birds chasing away the much larger Cuckoo away.

By contrast Cuckoo Flower represents purity and innocence - not one of naivety, for as an edible it bites like watercress or horseradish - and serves as a reminder that what is pure has fierce boundaries.

She grows out of damp soils where Water and Earth merge, representing the embodied consciousness of the shift from Maiden to Mother.

The cuckoo call is a reminder to remain vigilant and protect your creations - not to sink into the soporific bliss of a promised summer - to remain anchored both in conscious awareness and purity of heart, trusting our ability to counter any threat that may arise.

with much Love,
from my Heart to yours,
