Last week as I was sorting firewood from the gorse brush that I cut earlier this year … the silent, bright yellow gaping beaks of two day old chicks caught my attention … the third so newly hatched he hadn’t started to expect … it was such a beautifully constructed nest covered in neatly woven emerald green moss. I carefully covered the nest with some of the old branches and retreated.

I went back later to check and the mother Thrush was there sat so still and alert on the nest it would be hard to distinguish her from the backdrop. In theory I can see the nest from the window of my shepherds hut, though I do see her and her mate leave and arrive.

It’s mid-April and it’s something of a relief to know that throughout all the storm winds, rain, sleet and snow - that nest have been built, eggs laid and the young are hatching …

Sycamore forms it’s leaf buds in the late autumn and holds them tight over winter … now they are becoming long and green bursting open from pink sepals .. not unlike magnolia flowers. This opening is typical of their medicine that brings expansiveness, releases lung congestion and so much more.

I’ve been guided in co-creating a activated tincture from this … the winter buds have been infusing and today I added the elongated, burst buds and newly opened leaves just past their tender stage … This is a tonic for the nervous system and anxiety - where being too open, too soon is jarring and being closed for too long needs some gentle prising … Including all stages of the leafs growth supports both gentle containment through unsettling unsettling times while allowing for integrating expansion …

These leaves are the great light alchemists for a powerful, tall and true tree, loved by bees and children who play with their winged seeds .

May there be time for play within times of new beginnings and great change.
